ESCAPE

💜 WHEN YOU START FEELING LIKE A STRANGER IN YOUR OWN HOME

There’s a kind of loneliness people don’t talk about very often.

It’s not the loneliness of living alone.

It’s the loneliness of living with someone who makes you feel like you’re not even there.

You wake up in the same house.

You pass each other in the hallway.

You talk about bills, groceries, work, and what needs to be done tomorrow.

But somewhere along the way, the conversations about how you’re feeling stopped.

The laughter disappeared.

The affection became something you remembered instead of something you experienced.

And you find yourself sitting in another room, wondering how two people can live under the same roof and feel so far apart.

Sometimes you try to talk about it.

You explain that you’re hurting.

You say you miss the way things used to be.

You ask whether something has changed.

And sometimes the conversation ends with you feeling even more alone than you did before.

So eventually, you stop asking.

You stop reaching.

You stop expecting.

And little by little, you begin convincing yourself that maybe this is just what life is supposed to look like.

But here’s something important that needs to be said.

Not every lonely marriage is an abusive marriage.

Relationships go through difficult seasons. People become distracted, exhausted, disconnected, and sometimes emotionally unavailable.

But when loneliness is accompanied by deliberate humiliation, intimidation, manipulation, threats, or controlling behavior, something more serious may be happening.

And nobody should have to live in fear of expressing their feelings.

Nobody should have to earn basic respect.

Nobody should feel that their only choices are to remain silent or face punishment for speaking.

💜 Sometimes the hardest thing to admit isn’t that someone has hurt you.

It’s that you’ve spent so much time trying to hold everything together that you’ve forgotten what it feels like to be happy.

You remember the person you used to be.

The one who laughed without thinking.

The one who looked forward to coming home.

The one who believed their feelings mattered.

And somewhere inside, you wonder whether that person is still there.

They are.

Maybe they’re tired.

Maybe they’re discouraged.

Maybe they’ve been quiet for so long that finding their voice again feels impossible.

But they’re still there.

And they deserve to be heard.

Whether you’re a woman who has spent years putting everyone else first, or a man who was taught to keep his feelings to himself, your emotional well-being matters.

You don’t have to wait until everything falls apart to ask for support.

You don’t have to prove your pain to deserve compassion.

And you don’t have to figure out your next chapter all at once.

Sometimes the first step is simply admitting:

“I’m not okay with the way things are, and something needs to change.”

That doesn’t mean you have to make a decision today.

It means your feelings deserve attention, too.

At Riders Against Domestic Violence, we believe everyone deserves dignity, respect, and the freedom to live without fear.

And for those experiencing abuse, we’re here to help connect you with resources and support.

Because sometimes the first step toward finding yourself again is discovering that you don’t have to walk the road alone.
