Domestic violence often happens behind closed doors, but silence around it reaches far beyond the home. A person may go to work, smile at neighbors, and answer “I’m fine” while trying to figure out how to stay safe. We cannot always know what someone is carrying. We can make sure they know help exists.
Awareness is more than wearing purple or sharing a statistic. It is learning to recognize abuse, speaking about it without blaming survivors, and putting trustworthy resources where someone can find them when they are ready. One conversation or one shared link may reach a person who has never told anyone what is happening.
Start with understanding
Abuse is not limited to physical harm. It can include threats, intimidation, isolation, control of money, constant monitoring, and attempts to make someone doubt their own judgment. It can affect people of every age and background. A survivor may face real risks when trying to leave, along with concerns about children, housing, pets, work, or finances.
That is why “just leave” is rarely helpful. A better message is: “I believe you. You deserve to be safe. What would help you right now?” Listen without pressing for details. Let the survivor decide what they are ready to share and what step they can take safely.
Spread the word with care
Share a resource, an article, or a post that explains where to find help. Talk with your riding group, workplace, church, or community organization about ways to support survivors. If you are participating in RADV’s Tie a Purple Ribbon on the Bridge campaign this October, let the ribbon start a conversation and point people toward help.
Keep the person’s safety at the center. Do not post someone else’s story, location, photo, or messages without their permission. Do not tag a survivor in a public awareness post. If you are worried about someone, speak privately and ask what kind of contact is safe for them.
Turn awareness into a bridge
At Riders Against Domestic Violence, we believe every person deserves to know there is a road forward. RADV connects survivors with resources and encourages communities to stand beside them. We are a referral service; survivors should contact the listed help providers directly for confidential assistance and safety planning.
You do not need to have every answer to make a difference. Learn. Share a reliable resource. Listen without judgment. Support a local shelter or help center. Give someone room to choose their next step.
The words you spread today may be the ones someone remembers when they need a way forward.
You survived. You matter. Your best miles are ahead.
