The Voice at the Other End of the Line
When someone reaches out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, they’re usually not calling because they’re having a good day.
They’re calling because they’re scared.
Because they’re trapped.
Because they’re trying to protect their children.
Because they’re wondering if tonight is the night they should leave.
Sometimes, they’re calling from a locked bathroom.
Sometimes, from a parked car.
Sometimes, they’re whispering because the person hurting them is only a few feet away.
And on the other end of that phone…
…is another human being.
A man or woman who chose a career of compassion.
Someone who answers the phone not knowing what they are about to hear, yet still answers with patience, kindness, and hope.
These advocates don’t judge.
They don’t tell survivors what they “have” to do.
They listen.
They help create safety plans.
They connect people with shelters and local resources.
They remind frightened survivors that they are not alone.
The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year through phone, text, and online chat. Every conversation is handled by trained advocates who provide confidential, trauma-informed support and referrals in more than 200 languages. Since opening in 1996, the Hotline has answered nearly eight million contacts from people seeking help. (The Hotline)
At RADV, we know that advocates don’t always get to hear the ending of the stories they become part of.
They may never know if the survivor found safety.
If the children finally slept peacefully.
If someone finally smiled again.
But because they answered that call…
Lives have been changed.
Families have been saved.
Hope has been restored.
So today, we simply want to say…
Thank you.
Thank you for working nights, weekends, and holidays.
Thank you for answering the calls that most people couldn’t imagine receiving.
Thank you for carrying the weight of other people’s pain while helping them find the strength to take the next step.
Whether you work at the National Domestic Violence Hotline, a local shelter, a crisis center, or behind the scenes coordinating services—you matter.
You are often the first voice of hope someone hears.
And sometimes…
That’s enough to change a life.
If you or someone you know needs help, you don’t have to face it alone. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 by phone, text, or online chat. You can also find local resources through our website at RADV.org.
Because at Riders Against Domestic Violence…
We are the bridge.
