There comes a moment in every survivor’s journey when you realize something important.
No one is coming to give you permission.
Not your abuser.
Not the people who didn’t believe you.
Not the family members who told you to “just move on.”
Not the court system.
Not society.
If you wait for someone else to tell you it’s okay to heal, you may spend the rest of your life waiting.
Give yourself permission.
Give yourself permission to say “no” without feeling guilty.
Give yourself permission to walk away from people who continue to hurt you.
Give yourself permission to cry over what you’ve lost, while still believing in what you can become.
Give yourself permission to forgive yourself for decisions you made while you were simply trying to survive.
Give yourself permission to set boundaries that protect your peace.
Give yourself permission to laugh again, to trust again, and someday, to love again.
Most importantly, give yourself permission to believe that your life is worth fighting for.
Healing isn’t selfish.
Rest isn’t weakness.
Boundaries aren’t cruelty.
Starting over isn’t failure.
They are all signs that you are choosing life over fear.
For so long, someone else may have controlled your choices, your words, your finances, your friendships, or even your hope.
Today, take one thing back.
Your permission.
You don’t need anyone’s approval to become the person God created you to be.
The road ahead may still have bumps, but every mile you travel on your own terms is another mile away from abuse and another mile closer to freedom.
At Riders Against Domestic Violence, we believe every survivor deserves the chance to reclaim their voice, their choices, and their future.
Today, give yourself permission to take the next step.
No matter how small it is.
Because your healing belongs to you.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7
