One of the cruelest things abuse does is convince you that the abuse belongs to you.
Long after the bruises fade, long after you’ve escaped the relationship, and sometimes long after the world believes you’ve “moved on,” another battle continues. It happens quietly—in your own mind.
“You’re not good enough.”
“You’re the problem.”
“You’ll never make it.”
“Nobody else will ever love you.”
For many survivors, those thoughts feel like their own. They become so familiar that they are accepted as truth.
But they aren’t.
Those words didn’t begin with you.
They were planted by someone who wanted to control you, diminish you, or convince you that you were less than you are. Every insult, every criticism, every accusation became another echo inside your mind. Over time, those echoes grew louder than your own voice.
That is one of the lasting wounds of domestic violence.
The healing journey is not just about escaping the abuse. It is about learning to recognize which voice belongs to you.
Your voice doesn’t call you worthless.
Your voice doesn’t tell you that you deserve pain.
Your voice doesn’t shame you for surviving.
Those are borrowed voices. They are echoes of what someone else repeatedly said or made you believe.
Healing begins when you start answering those echoes with truth.
“I am worthy.”
“I am enough.”
“I deserve peace.”
“I am not who they said I was.”
Every time you challenge those old lies, you reclaim another piece of yourself.
At RADV, we believe survivors don’t just leave abusive relationships—they rediscover the person abuse tried to erase. That process takes courage, patience, and grace. Some days the echoes will still be there, but little by little, they become quieter.
And eventually…
Your own voice becomes the loudest one in the room.
It speaks with hope instead of fear.
With truth instead of shame.
With compassion instead of condemnation.
Because the person you were always meant to be was never destroyed.
They were simply waiting to be heard again.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” — Romans 12:2 (NIV)
The voices that condemned you do not have the final word. God’s truth does.
