Abuse doesn’t always leave visible scars. Sometimes the deepest wounds are the ones that change how you see yourself.
Little by little, an abuser chips away at your confidence. They tell you that you’re too emotional, too sensitive, too weak, too difficult to love. They isolate you from the people who remind you of your worth. They make you question your own judgment until you begin to wonder if the person you used to be is gone forever.
But here’s the truth:
Your abuser never had the power to destroy the real you.
They may have buried your confidence beneath fear. They may have covered your joy with anxiety. They may have silenced your voice with intimidation. But they could never erase the person you truly are.
The person who dreamed.
The person who laughed.
The person who cared deeply.
The person who believed in tomorrow.
That person is still there.
Survivors often believe they have to become someone completely different in order to heal. In reality, healing is often the journey back to yourself.
It’s remembering what made you smile before someone convinced you not to.
It’s finding hobbies you once loved.
It’s reconnecting with friends and family.
It’s learning to trust your own instincts again.
It’s discovering that your opinions matter and your voice deserves to be heard.
Healing isn’t about pretending the abuse never happened. It happened, and it may always be part of your story. But it doesn’t have to write the chapters that come next.
Your abuser doesn’t get to decide how your story ends.
Every time you choose peace over chaos, hope over fear, and healing over bitterness, you take another step toward reclaiming the life that belongs to you.
You are not the names they called you.
You are not the lies they told you.
You are not the fear they planted inside you.
You are stronger than the pain you’ve endured, and you are more valuable than they ever allowed you to believe.
The real you has never been lost.
It has simply been waiting for the day you realized that your future belongs to you—not to the person who tried to take it away.
At Riders Against Domestic Violence, we believe every survivor deserves the opportunity to rediscover who they are beyond the abuse. One step at a time, one choice at a time, one day at a time, healing is possible.
Don’t let your abuser steal the real you. The best chapters of your story are still waiting to be written.
