An RADV Article About Healing
Healing is personal.
We can encourage each other. We can walk beside each other. We can hold out a hand when someone is struggling. But ultimately, every survivor has their own bridge to cross.
And no two bridges look exactly the same.
For one person, healing may mean finally leaving an abusive relationship.
For another, it may mean learning how to sleep through the night without fear.
Someone else may be rebuilding financially, learning to trust again, going to counseling, finding their faith again, raising children who have also been hurt, or simply trying to recognize the person looking back at them in the mirror.
There is no single timetable for healing.
Your Bridge Doesn’t Have to Look Like Someone Else’s
One of the easiest things to do while healing is compare ourselves to other people.
They seem stronger than me.
They moved on faster than I did.
Why am I still struggling with this?
Why can’t I just let it go?
But you don’t know the bridge they had to cross—and they don’t completely know yours.
Your experiences are yours. Your wounds are yours. Your circumstances are yours.
That means your healing will be yours too.
You don’t have to cross your bridge at someone else’s pace.
Some Bridges Are Crossed One Step at a Time
There may be days when you feel like you’ve made tremendous progress.
Then something happens.
A memory.
A smell.
A song.
A phone call.
A place you haven’t visited in years.
Suddenly, it feels like you’re standing right back where you started.
But you’re not.
Healing isn’t always a straight road forward.
Sometimes we stop.
Sometimes we look back.
Sometimes fear convinces us that we can’t take another step.
And sometimes we need someone beside us reminding us:
You don’t have to cross the entire bridge today. Just take the next step.
That step might be asking for help.
It might be making a phone call.
It might be setting a boundary.
It might be accepting help without feeling guilty.
It might simply be getting out of bed and deciding that today deserves another chance.
Small steps still move you forward.
Don’t Be Ashamed of the Scars You Carry
A bridge doesn’t erase the place you came from.
It connects where you have been with somewhere else.
Healing works much the same way.
The goal isn’t necessarily to forget everything that happened to you. Some things become part of our story.
But they don’t have to remain in control of the story.
Your scars don’t mean you failed.
Your difficult days don’t mean you’re weak.
And needing help doesn’t mean you’re going backward.
It means you’re human.
Sometimes Someone Needs to Walk Beside Us
I’ve said for years that RADV is the bridge.
But I’ve come to believe something else too.
RADV doesn’t cross the bridge for anyone.
We help people find it.
We point toward resources. We raise awareness. We offer encouragement. We remind survivors that help exists and that there can still be life on the other side of what they’ve experienced.
Then we walk beside them whenever we can.
Because sometimes knowing someone is beside you is enough to take another step.
And on the other side of that bridge, healing can begin to look different.
That’s where Bloom Beyond Bruises comes in.
Bloom is about what happens as survivors begin rediscovering themselves beyond what was done to them. It’s about growth, confidence, hope, identity, and recognizing that surviving was not the end of the journey.
There can be life after abuse.
There can be purpose after pain.
There can be something beautiful growing on the other side.
Keep Crossing
Maybe you’re standing at the beginning of your bridge today.
Maybe you’re halfway across.
Maybe you’ve crossed one bridge only to discover another one ahead of you.
That’s okay.
Don’t measure your healing by somebody else’s journey.
Look at how far you have come.
And when the other side still seems too far away, don’t worry about getting there all at once.
Take one step.
Then another.
Rest when you need to.
Accept a hand when one is offered.
Pray when you don’t know what else to do.
And keep going.
Because your story doesn’t end on this side of the bridge.
You survived. You matter. You made it this far. Keep going. One mile at a time.
Your best miles are ahead.
