Domestic violence already fills a survivor’s mind with fear, doubt, and uncertainty. Don’t let hopelessness become one more thing that holds you back.
You’ll hear people say:
“The police won’t do anything.”
“No one will believe you.”
“The courts never help.”
“Why even try?”
Those statements may come from someone’s painful experience, but they are not guaranteed to be your future.
Will every survivor have the outcome they deserve? Unfortunately, no.
But many do find officers who listen. Many find advocates who care. Many find shelters that open their doors. Many find judges who protect them. Many rebuild lives they never thought were possible.
If we constantly spread the message that nothing works, we may discourage someone from taking the very step that could save their life.
Instead of spreading hopelessness, spread hope.
Tell survivors to document everything.
Encourage them to contact a local domestic violence advocacy center.
Remind them that if one door closes, another may open.
Keep searching until they find the help they deserve.
Don’t let someone else’s disappointment become someone else’s reason to give up.
At RADV, we believe in facing reality while refusing to surrender to it. Every survivor deserves the chance to be heard, supported, and protected. The first step is believing that your story is worth telling.
If you or someone you know needs help, visit RADV.org and click Help to find domestic violence resources in your area.
Don’t spread fear. Spread hope. It may be the reason someone chooses to take that first step toward freedom.
