RADV Article: Every Choice Is a Payment

Life has taught me something I wish I had understood much earlier.

Every choice we make is like making a payment.

Some payments are small. Others cost us more than we ever imagined. But every decision is an investment in the life we will eventually live.

When I look back over my own life, I can see it clearly now.

The times I chose anger over peace… I paid for it.

The times I stayed where I should have walked away… I paid for it.

The times I ignored warning signs because I hoped things would change… I paid for it.

The times I chose healing instead of bitterness… I paid for that too.

The difference is that some payments bring regret, while others bring freedom.

If you are living with abuse today, understand this: the abuse is not your fault. No one deserves to be abused. The choices of your abuser belong to them alone.

But there comes a point where you begin making payments toward your own future.

Choosing to ask for help.

Choosing to make a safety plan.

Choosing counseling.

Choosing healthy friendships.

Choosing to believe that your life has value.

Those are payments that may feel difficult today, but one day they become the life you’re living.

Many of us look around and wonder why our lives are the way they are. Sometimes the answer is found in the choices we’ve been making over months or years. Every decision leaves a mark. Every decision moves us closer to something or farther away from it.

The encouraging news is this:

Your next payment doesn’t have to look like your last one.

Today you can choose courage.

Today you can choose forgiveness without returning to danger.

Today you can choose healthy boundaries.

Today you can choose hope.

Those choices may not change tomorrow morning, but they will change the direction of your life over time.

One day you’ll look back and realize something incredible.

You are living in the life you invested in.

So ask yourself one question before making your next decision:

“Is this a payment toward the life I want… or toward the life I’m trying to leave behind?”

The future isn’t built in one giant decision.

It’s built one choice…

One payment…

One day at a time.

“Choose this day whom you will serve.”Joshua 24:15

At RADV, we believe every healthy choice is another step across the bridge from surviving to living. No matter where your journey begins, your next choice can move you toward hope.
