After abuse, many survivors become so focused on rebuilding their lives that they forget to live them.
You work on your finances.
You work on your health.
You work on your confidence.
You work on your trauma.
You work on your future.
Every day becomes another project to fix.
You tell yourself:
“I’ll celebrate when I get back on my feet.”
“I’ll enjoy life after I finish healing.”
“I’ll smile again once everything is in order.”
But life has a way of reminding us that tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.
Sometimes, in the middle of rebuilding, you have to stop…
…and eat the cake.
Not because your life is perfect.
Not because the pain is gone.
Not because every problem has been solved.
But because you deserve moments of joy today—not someday.
Abuse steals enough from us already. It steals our confidence, our peace, our trust, and sometimes even our identity. Don’t let it steal every moment of happiness while you’re trying to recover.
Healing isn’t only about surviving.
It’s about laughing with friends.
Watching a sunset.
Taking the ride you’ve been putting off.
Drinking coffee without rushing.
Sharing dessert with someone you love.
Celebrating small victories that no one else even notices.
Those moments aren’t distractions from healing.
They are part of healing.
You don’t have to earn permission to experience happiness.
You don’t have to wait until you’ve reached some imaginary finish line.
Life isn’t a reward for healing.
Life is what helps healing happen.
So if today gives you a reason to smile…
Take it.
If someone offers you kindness…
Accept it.
If there’s cake…
Eat the cake.
Because survivors deserve more than simply making it through another day.
They deserve to enjoy the life they fought so hard to reclaim.
You survived for a reason. Don’t spend so much time rebuilding your life that you forget to live it.
