Changing Tomorrow by Investing in Today
Series #4: The Example They Remember
Children may forget the toys you bought them.
They may outgrow the clothes you gave them.
They may not remember every birthday or every vacation.
But they’ll always remember how you made them feel.
They’ll remember whether your home was a place of peace or a place of fear.
They’ll remember whether your words encouraged them or tore them down.
They’ll remember whether you treated others with respect.
The greatest lessons in life are rarely taught.
They’re lived.
Children don’t become who we tell them to be.
They become who they see us being.
If they see patience, they’ll learn patience.
If they see forgiveness, they’ll understand grace.
If they see kindness, they’ll discover compassion.
If they see respect between parents, friends, and neighbors, they’ll begin to believe that’s what love is supposed to look like.
Every day, we’re writing chapters in someone else’s story.
Not with a pen…
But with our actions.
For many of us, those examples weren’t always healthy.
Some of us grew up believing yelling was normal.
Some believed controlling behavior was love.
Some learned that silence was safer than speaking the truth.
The good news is this:
The story doesn’t have to end where it began.
We have the opportunity to become the example we wish we had.
To choose gentleness over anger.
Listening over judging.
Encouragement over criticism.
Respect over control.
That’s how generational cycles are broken.
Not by perfection…
But by making one better choice today than we made yesterday.
At Riders Against Domestic Violence, we believe prevention starts with ordinary people making extraordinary decisions every day.
To love well.
To lead well.
To live in a way that gives the next generation something worth following.
Because someone is always watching.
And someone is always learning.
Be the example they’ll remember.
